Air-Cooled 911 vs Model S P85

By: Kase van Rees

To be fair, nobody would ever cross shop these two cars. In almost every way the two are very different, and comparing them seems an odd thing to do. However, on closer inspection, both are rear engine and rear drive. While the Tesla pushes out an additional 150 horsepower, it also has to push an extra fifteen hundred pounds. Both cars also handle well on account of their low centers of gravity. Despite the competent handling both cars are also very comfortable to ride in thanks to their well engineered suspension set-ups. Both cars also have simple but appealing interiors, wrapped in tan leather. But the similarities pretty much end there.

Without a doubt the tesla walks circles around the 911 in the acceleration department. Instant, electric throttle response makes the Model S an energy efficient rocket among it's competition's mere gas-powered sedans. The Tesla is also stacked with some of the best tech features in the industry including the famously huge touch screen and digital dash that gives the minimalist interior its futuristic appeal. As well, the Tesla has ample space to comfortably transport all the passengers and luggage you can conjure up for a trip.

On paper, it seems the Tesla is the clear victor. But we're interested in what cars are like on pavement, not paper. Though the Model S is a blast to throttle down in, it is seriously lacking in those components that really make a drivers car. The reason air-cooled 911s have a cult following is because they are unreal to drive. The steering feel, braking feel, clutch and shifter feel, and the throttle response leaves nothing to be desired. Every component has a direct and visceral response to driver inputs that allows you to perfectly gauge what the car is doing without having to look at any gauges. These subjective qualities are the impossible thing to record on paper, that also make the car such a hero.

And among all of the fantastic driving characteristics and ample performance, there is that classic, mechanical flat-six sound. Hearing that German engineered engine working behind you to propel the 911's timeless body down the road is pure bliss. Without a doubt, the Model S is objectively the better car, and arguably even the best car on the market right now. Practically unbeatable in acceleration, safety, practicality, technology, and stylish as well as fun nonetheless. But the 911 is driving nirvana, and one of the best engineered, executed, and refined vehicles of all time. Like a great piece of art, the 911's value is in the experience it provides rather than it's utility. The Model S, however, is like one of those really nice touch-screen refrigerators. Its sharp looking, very practical, and if you can afford one, really the best way to cool your food. But to the right driver, a car is not an appliance, it really is art.
